Porsche 987.1 Boxster / Cayman SOUL Competition Package

$5,270.00$5,510.00

The Soul Performance Products Competition Package for your 987.1 Cayman / Boxster is built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. Look at the stock headers on your car, you can see the massive catalytic converters, thin flanges and squashed primary tubing – ultimately holding back power. Moving rearward to the OEM exhaust system, a secondary set of catalytic converters is in place within the exhaust to prevent power even more. The Soul Performance Products 987.1 Competition Package focuses on all of the weak points of the OEM exhaust system and replaces them in one fell swoop. Designed to work in perfect harmony, the Competition Headers and Performance Exhaust System rely on a mutually beneficial design. The headers use large, long primary tubes that flow into a smooth merge collector and the Performance Exhaust System uses mandrel bent over-axle pipes while deleting the secondary catalytic converters for a great increase in exhaust flow. Our fortified, high flow mufflers encourage a tasteful but hair raising sound while minimizing drone. You’ll greatly enjoy the increased responsiveness and character of your car!

Would like to make a mention to SOUL Performance for the amazing quality and excellent customer service. This Pennsylvania based company recently opened a brand new state of the art facility in Willow Grove. From the point I showed up til the time I was ready to come pick the car up, they gave me step by step updates on everything they were doing with the car. The quality of the exhaust is second to none and the sound couldn’t be better. The car received the cat-less competition headers along with the back section with a upgraded muffler to reduce the drone. The tone is absolutely amazing, and the drive ability of this exhaust is amazing. I would recommend them to anyone.

Those who are reading this may consider my perspective quite the anomaly, or perhaps if you are coming from a similar angle, this could give “proper” insight into Soul Performance Products and the aura of quality that they emit. Either way, I believe there is value to be absorbed regardless of your initial plan of attack.

Let me start by explaining that I originate from a bias that all Porsche exhausts are overpriced and take our elegant German masterpieces from top shelf sound with a side of heavy restriction, to loud, uncomplimentary, and debilitating exhaust notes. I don’t have to throw names or brands out there but if you thought “Oh god” when you saw the price of an aftermarket exhaust(s) for a Porsche than we’re likely on the same page. I wholeheartedly understand your pain. Let me anchor that down by noting I have multiple vehicles with LOUD exhausts, and prefer them that way. The volume doesn’t disturb me, it’s more so the fact that the stock Porsche 987.1 S exhaust sound is PERFECT to me aside from the fact that it sounds too congested, restricted, restrained. I’m no Porsche or brand fanboy, just hunting the right kit for the right car.

After a combination of understanding the incompetency the exhaust market had to offer for my 2008 Porsche Cayman 987.1 S, and experience with successfully welding custom exhaust systems on other personal vehicles of mine, I was adamant on taking the valiant path of creating my own monstrosity of a loud, aggressive, high volume exhaust to calibrate the correct sound I desired. Mind you that, this would be at much lower of a price than the MSRP most aftermarket company’s offer. I was aware the engineering would take some time, trial, and error, but It would have made for great content on the channel for my media company, Supercars of Philadelphia, and for me to look back and watch a video of me installing it thinking “wow, I am an imbecile.”

    WELL, THEN I FOUND SOUL.

I’ll be honest, because I don’t want anyone else making this mistake. I saw some exhaust videos on the internet, and thought “Hm.. they sound better than all of the others but I’m still not quite impressed to the level I need to be at, for overpriced, bent metal.” (At this point I was unaware of the price point, merely assuming, since every other exhaust system for my car was worth an uninsured pancreas transplant, that this company was no different). Lord was I wrong. The sub $4k price point for the FULL COMPETITION EXHAUST intrigued me – which led to moonlit conversation with my first point of contact at Soul; Evan. Alright, it wasn’t moon-lit, we just spoke over the phone, but it felt like it. Even with 25+ years of total industry experience, it is rather easy to fall into the mindset that Soul Performance is a customer service company first, Exhaust Engineering Aficionado second, and that’s no discount to their products. The Customer Service is just that good. (By the way – No exhaust video does this exhaust justice; you have to hear it in person.)

A few healthy conversations later, I was at the Soul Performance Products Headquarters watching my perfectly stock 987.1 S get its exhaust scavenged off of its underbelly by their Porsche technicians. I verb scavenge due to the excessively surprising rate at which these gentleman removed my exhaust (although it was more of a sophisticated dance considering it went so smoothly). It’s almost as if they’ve done this before…. Wait, they have… quite often.

Once the exhaust was installed and on my car, I couldn’t wait to hear it. It doesn’t matter how many 987.1S I could’ve heard this exhaust on in person, on the internet, through tinder, anywhere – It’s just different hearing it on your own car. I just had to, because that’s totally a thing, no? The difference realistically was miniscule being I could’ve heard the exhaust on a thousand other 987.1S set up just as mine (stock) and It would’ve sounded nearly identical but that is where similarities end.

The new competition system on my vehicle roared, granted we were indoors and acoustics were offering a much better delivery of audible euphoria, yet once we got outdoors to tell earth I was back, and get a first impression of the situation while being primary in the cockpit, It was a totally different feel. You see, I’m quite familiar with loud vehicles, proper sounding, loud vehicles. Gallardo, Huracan, 599, f430, 458, MP4-12C, F-Type-R, Shelby; you would agree the clarity of the exhaust note these vehicles emit is on another level. Well, after this Soul Full Comp Package Exhaust System was installed on my car, I no longer own a “Cayman”. It’s properly fitted as a Porsche In my eyes now, and carries the sound to boot, to stand along side any Ferrari, Lamborghini, 911 GT Car, etc., and blend right in, if not surpass them in levels of excitement. The added power gains are noticeable as well, quite so.

It doesn’t end there; I was able to experience the exhaust that weekend on a rally from NJ to Maryland & back and pilot the car through some proper roads where I could comb through the gearbox with little clutter. Being grateful for the opportunity, I kept finding new excitement with every acceleration, downshift, anything. It’s amazing how an exhaust note can make you feel so much more connected to the car. This would be due to the lack of delay between commands and how the vehicle responds, and speaks back to you through the exhaust, compared to stock.

To summarize the polarizing changes SOUL has made to the car, because I doubt you want to read much further, and I’ll be surprised if anyone has even made it this far, I’ll end with disclosing that this exhaust stays true to the sound of a Flat Six Porsche Engine, it merely enunciates, personifies everything you loved about the stock exhaust, and deletes what you may have not noticed you didn’t like (the muffled tone, quiet shifts, restricted personality and characteristics that the car did have stock, but a bunch of catalytic something and metal boxes called “mufflers” held it back). If you are on the fence about making the move to this exhaust, or any component of it, because you want to custom build something yourself, or you still think they all sound similar and are overpriced, do yourself a favor and invest in you, your car, and your future experiences spent together. Besides, you already spent enough time reading this all the way through, how have you not convinced yourself by now that this is the ONLY way to go?

Couldn’t be happier with the entire experience with Soul. The full kit shipped the same day as order, the personalization (our Boost Brothers Garage logo) was gorgeous, and the customer service was top notch!

The install went very smoothly and the sound is intoxicating, amazing when I lay into it and doesn’t drone like they promised!

By far the nicest and best sounding exhaust I’ve dealt with for P-Cars!

  4. James Angelce

Thought it was going to be too loud, was wrong. Can’t believe this is the same car, outstanding work mates!

I’m not big on dyno numbers and don’t care what the gains are as long as a mod makes me happy, the exhaust does all of that and noticeably wakes up the car. Had 2 co workers drive the car so I could hear it from outside and it sounds so good , and both of them got out of the car and loved the way it sounded.

Funny story I was diving it this afternoon to go get tuned and someone pulled out in front of me so I reved it to 7k like an asshole and the dude just pulled over and gave me a thumbs up Haha, I got a kick out of it.

Hoping to get to the track this Friday and 2 more days planned this year so I’ll really be able to let it scream.

So far I am impressed with everything from the fit finish and sound. I really love the single wall tips also, look so clean.

I installed the Soul Performance Cat back system almost a month ago. As reported by a number of people already, I was happy to confirm the built quality, efficient design plus service and support I received from Soul Performance, especially John @ SoulPP

As the cat back system broke in over 12-15 heat cycles, some of the initial sound resonation issues I had went away but I was still getting what some may describe as slight drone under extreme loads (flooring gas at 2000-2300 rpm in 3rd , 4th gear). I reached out to a few people and I was told to replace the 152,000 mile old Stock Headers. The Cats in my headers have been shot for a long time and I needed to get new headers anyways.

Happy to report that adding the headers to the cat back absolutely fixed any / all resonation issues I was having.. and let’s remember, I have a 152,000 mile otherwise stock car with tired and old stock suspension , trunks seals etc so in my opinion that says a lot about how well designed this product really is.

I share this with great humility, but I have been “modding” and tuning Cars and Sport bikes for close to 30 years, and I can say this with absolute confidence that Soup Performance Full Exhaust system is hands down the Best system I have ever added to any of my vehicles. To reiterate, there is no “….given the price” or “…for the money” at the end of that statement. It is the best I personally have tried…. period.

Sound: I was extremely skeptical of the videos on youtube as sound can be manipulated, most microphones don’t ever pick up accurate real world exhaust sound. I also heard one of the users on youtube use a phrase ( Ferrari like Wail ) that sounded like a lot of exaggeration..
Well, happy to report that I was wrong! I really have no other ways to describe the WOT sound you get after 4000-ish RPM.. Ferrari F430 like wail..
I don’t know how its possible to get that kind of exotic sound from a flat 6.. but the folks at Soul have found a way.

I have the full exhaust (long tube headers + mufflers) and as reported in other threads, my car came Alive after this upgrade. I have stock intake, TB and even OEM Air filter and yet the car was transformed after this upgrade.
A big jump in low end TQ, mid range. I never had PSM interfere on exits of corners until I added the exhaust. I didn’t need to take the car for a dyno run to feel the change in HP.

I was looking to improve the sound on my 9871. Cayman and originally had wanted to get the Meisterschaft GT exhaust, so I had reached out and asked the Cayman community what I should do. John of SoulPP reached out to me and recommended their exhaust system, I came to the site and was not immediately impressed with the provided sound clips.

After researching different brands, I gave SoulPP another chance, watched some videos on YouTube that “Supercars of Philadelphia” and “Boost Brothers Garage” posted up. Those videos really impressed me with the sound that this exhaust makes. It sounded like exactly what I was looking for, as of last week I have had the full competition exhaust with the flat-black exhaust tips and I’m extremely happy with the exhaust. Under a full load, it sounds about as close to a 911 GT3 as a Cayman will get. Plus, the exhaust tips look absolutely fantastic.

Very happy with my purchase and the help of the SoulPP members, Mike Ham was very informative and helpful throughout the entire process. He got me exactly what I needed and really hooked me up with what I believe to be the perfect exhaust for my taste.

Thanks to all of you guys at SoulPP!

I went SOUL and have not regretted it once. It sounds fantastic, the fitment was spot on, and the craftsmanship is top notch. The car truly sounds like it should with the Soul Performance exhaust, I absolutely love going through tunnels and it occasionally has an awesome throaty clack when slowly pulling off from a stop.

Just finally installed this beautiful piece of exhaust system in my Porsche 987.1 Cayman S. I went with the full competition package with headers and all. This has truly been the best customer service experience I’ve ever gotten from a company so far. For Mike to personally respond to every email I sent him promptly right from the time I was researching the product to the time I made the purchase, amazes me. Even went out of his way to make accommodations for me when the specific exhaust tip I wanted wasn’t available at the time. Even the company who installed the exhaust for me admitted that this was the most good looking and crisp sounding exhaust they have ever seen or installed before. Mind you this company only deals with exotics (Porsche’s, Ferrari’s, mclaren’s etc). The owner of the shop even admitted to considering one for his Porsche as well. Back to the sound of this thing, on startup it grows and just makes me smile!. Driving through town is a joy now due to almost having no “drone”. Best of all, it isn’t obnoxious in any way, so I can leave the neighborhood without waking up everyone. All in all, I’m one very happy and satisfied customer. Thanks to Mike, John, and the rest of the crew at SPP!. You’ve gained a loyal customer for life!

I bought the full exhaust (headers and cat back exhaust) from Soul for my 06′ S with 65K miles about 3 months ago. I installed it myself. Live in MD and commute to Philly for work. No problem with the bolts on the old headers for me. Was an easy install. Hardest part was running the new O2 sensor wires. I had issues for a few weeks with check engine light going off, but that was due to me not tightening the 100 cell cats tight enough. Haven’t had an issue for the last 2 months with triggering the CEL.

MD has self service kiosks for emissions checks and as long as you don’t have a CEL, you will pass with no problem. I think Jersey is a bit more stringent. As for the sound. My wife and I took it to CT to a friends house and it was not loud on the highway cruising at 90. (Meaning my wife did not complain about it.) If you get into it however, it sounds incredible. I usually leave my neighborhood at 5am to head to work and my neighbors would let me know if it was annoying to them. I did have to switch back to the factory header gaskets which are a thin metal vs. the gaskets that SOUL provides that are thicker. I did notice a bit of drone around 2300-2500 rpm when I switched back to the stock gaskets that was not there with the thicker ones. That being said, it is rare that it happens.

I love the exhaust and there is definitely a noticeable performance improvement over stock. I have about 3,000 miles on the new setup and am looking forward to putting a lot more miles on it.

I bought the competition package for my 2008 987 S. I first wanted to say that the customer service from Mike was phenomenal. I’m new to the 987 performance market and he walked me through my options, how to install the O2 spacers and explained how they functioned. I was able to install my exhaust in about 4 hours. Probably a bit long, however installing the O2 spacers was the most difficult part. Trying to get them angled in the right directions to fit and tight was a bit of a problem. I had a few problems after getting it installed with the exhaust tip alignment and with the O2 spacers(Installer error). I discovered that my drivers side O2 spacer was a bit loose and at exactly 2000 rpm it would vibrate against the exhaust creating a weird sound. It only happened at 2K and took some going over the whole exhaust to find it. However the exhaust note that comes from this exhaust system with the headers is amazing! To go from stock to this system was a great investment!! You just can’t beat the sound of the Soul!!

  13. mytime1 (Rennlist)

I installed the Soul de-catted headers and exhaust package on my 987.1 S. I did not do the tune but am considering that now along with the GT3 TB and intake plenum. (But then I need to make room for the upgraded shift cables…ugh…so many things to do!

Anyway, The exhaust alone made a huge difference for me. I noticed it more in the 4-5k range. It was smoother and more responsive. The sound is amazing when you wring it out to 7k.
